McDonalds sausage and egg burrito

As I was leaving this morning I heard a commercial for McDonald’s breakfast and they made their sausage and egg burrito sound so simple. Sausage, egg, cheese and tortilla – simple! What is really in this “food”?

Right from the McDonald’s website:

Flour tortilla

Enriched Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Shortening (Interesterified Soybean Oil and/or Hydrogenated Soybean Oil and/or Soybean Oil and/or Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil), Contains 2% or Less of: Sugar, Leavening (May Contain One or More of: Baking Soda, Sodium Aluminum Sulfate, Corn Starch, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Calcium Sulfate, Monocalcium Phosphate), Salt, Wheat Gluten, Dough Conditioners (Sodium Metabisulfite [Contains Sulfites], Distilled Monoglycerides).

Sausage & Scrambled Egg Mix

Pre-Cooked Egg Product (Whole Eggs, Nonfat Milk, Soybean Oil, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Black Pepper Flavor [Corn Starch, Spices, Mixed Triglycerides, Flavors, Silicon Dioxide, Gelatin, Carboxymethyl Cellulose, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Gum Acacia], Extractives of Black Pepper, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Butter {Cream}, Lipolized Butter Oil, Flavors, Artificial Flavors]), Pre-Cooked Sausage Crumbles (Pork, Water, Salt, Dextrose, Spices, Corn Syrup Solids, Sugar, BHA, Propyl Gallate, Citric Acid [Added To Help Protect Flavor]), Vegetables (Tomatoes, Green Chiles, Onions, Calcium Chloride, Citric Acid).

Pasteurized Process American Cheese

Milk, Cream, Water, Cheese Culture, Sodium Citrate, Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Citric Acid, Sodium Phosphate, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Lactic Acid, Acetic Acid, Enzymes, Sodium Pyrophosphate, Natural Flavor (Dairy Source), Color Added, Soy Lecithin (Added for Slice Separation).

If you read me at all your know I don’t eat wheat products anymore. I steer clear of gluten altogether and my guess is that McDonald’s tortillas are not much different in terms of ingredients as the vast majority of tortillas you can find in the grocery store.

Let’s look at the egg and sausage mix which includes the vegetables. Something tells me we will find some funny stuff in there. Check out how many ingredients make the “black pepper flavor” – Corn Starch, Spices, Mixed Triglycerides, Flavors, Silicon Dioxide, Gelatin, Carboxymethy!! Why not just use black pepper?? I count 23 different ingredients in their “pre-cooked egg product”. TWENTY-THREE!! The sausage looks OK until they decide to put corn syrup in sausage (what?! why?!) and then for good measure they really kill it with four more unnecessary ingredients. Even the vegetables have calcium chloride and citric acid added. Heaven forbid they just cut up some veggies.

The eggs, sausage and vegetables should include eggs, sausage (Pork, Water, Salt, Spices) and then veggies (tomatoes, green chiles and onions). It should be eight ingredients but McDonald’s turns it into 39 ingredients, many of which are not even food.

And if you think dairy is unprocessed foods, you are fooling yourself. If anything, it is processed from the get-go when milk is pasteurized. Just look at all those ingredients in the “cheese”. I don’t eat dairy anymore either and this just drives home the point. If you still eat cheese take a look at that packaging and see if you really want to keep eating it.

Don’t you love advertising?
